It’s not too late to choose an adoption plan for your child, even after giving birth. Maybe your circumstances have changed, or you have more clarity after having your baby. No matter the reason, you can start an adoption plan at any time.
We don’t provide adoption services at Ohana Health, but we can help you process your decision and connect you with adoption resources if you decide to pursue an adoption plan.
You Still Have Options
Some women begin thinking about adoption early in pregnancy, while others take more time. It’s completely valid to consider adoption after your child is born, whether you’re still in the hospital or already at home.
Adoption may be the best choice for you due to personal circumstances like emotional readiness, relationship dynamics, financial concerns, or other factors affecting your ability to parent. Your health and your child’s well-being are what matter most.
If you are in the hospital, you can ask to speak with a social worker about your options. If you’re already home, contacting a licensed adoption agency can help you begin the process and learn what to expect.
Understanding the Process
Adoption looks different for everyone. You can make an adoption plan that reflects your needs and preferences. A licensed agency or adoption attorney will guide you through every step and help you understand your rights.
There are typically three types of adoption plans to consider:
- Open Adoption – You choose the adoptive family and have ongoing contact, which may include visits, phone calls, emails, or text messages.
- Semi-Open Adoption – You still choose the adoptive family, but communication happens through a third party, such as an adoption agency.
- Closed Adoption – No contact is shared between you and the adoptive family, and your information remains confidential.
You won’t be responsible for medical or legal expenses during the adoption process. Financial and material support is often available to help with your basic needs.
